One thing to realize about ultralight fly rods and their lines is that the stepdown increment gets smaller as the line weights get lighter. So the effective difference down to a 0-weight isn't much from a 1-weight. A good caster should be able to cast 50' to 60' sitting in a float tube with a 9' 5 or 6 weight. But the reality, as Mojo mentioned, is that one rarely needs to make that cast over 40'. In river fishing, the main advantage of the 10' rod is line control. It allows you to keep less line on the water for a dead drift.
