They really needed it. And I checked the air filter. After changing the plugs I went to drive it. When it shifted into 2nd gear, it started sputtering.

I replaced the angle sensor (new part tested good on an ohmmeter). Chances are you were really working the handlebars leading up to it cutting out. The Honda PS system when over heated cuts out to save itself, giving you regular steering effort.
