They have governors, throttle stops, geared for torque, etc. There's plenty of options to make them faster, gearing and the "free" mods (remove throttle stop, adjust the governor, make sure you're getting full throttle travel) would be my first suggestion. The torque converter might be preventing the engine from revving higher.
