Jun 12, 2010 · Is there a Walmart near you? They usually have the Mossberg 500s for $227. I prefer the Nova over the 500 because it is virtually indestructable. $250 for a used Nova is a bit much. Have you tried haggling with the shop. $200 is more in the ballpark for the Nova, IMO. I have bought several 500s for $100-150 in really good shape. Saw a post that said Remington 870 was akin to the Mossberg 500. The 870 is inexpensive, the 500 is cheap. There is a difference. My dad's been shooting competition level trap with an old, beat up, scratched up, rusty 870 for over 20 years. He goes through 10,000 rounds plus a year with it.

The 500 is a good solid gun, not expensive to buy or own. Easy to get parts for and a lot of add ons, accessories, modifications, upgrades, etc etc available. Also I think easy to clean and maintain. Haven't used a Nova but from reading the posts - people either love them or hate them, not much inbetween.
