Yellow Mode = same mode as DMC3: Dante's Awakening. You can buy up to 99 Yellow Orbs. When you die, you can use a single Yellow Orb it lets you continue from the nearest check point. Gold Mode = new, you can have up to 3 Gold Orbs. When you die, it lets you use one Gold Orb to revive on the spot. There is absolutely no reason not to pick Gold Mode.
