Hi folks new to the group here. I've got a Kohler sv601 vertical shaft engine that was surging. I did a carburetor cleaning and new plug new coil and now I cannot get it to keep a high idle. I did the adjustment as per the manual for the governor but still once I engage the blades, the RPMs come...That is the throttle that the arm operates and not the choke. The governor may be out of adjustment and causing the surging. Perform the static governor adjustment and see if that takes care of your surging. Locate the governor shaft where it comes out of the engine block. But there is a Low Idle Adjustment... 27 kohler sputters at full throttle. I have a 27hp vertical shaft kohler command on a husqvarna zero turn that sputters under load at full throttle. It really slows down, not just an occasional miss. I can back it to about half throttle with the blades on and go easy with the hydros and it will maintain speed. Oil fine. Gas in tanks, valve open.

Naturally I assumed it was the carb so I adjusted the air/fuel screw unti it smoothed out. All seemed well until I went to use the tractor several days later and the engine surging was back.
