Les Miserables - it's tragic but also immensely life-affirming. The Dead Will Tell by Linda Castillo was brutal. It's about fifth in a series and dips a little into unrelated side plots that may not interest readers who aren't following along with all the books, but the core plot made a surprisingly huge impact about lasting damage that can result from an act of cruelty.
