If you want to use firearms as a magus your best bet is going to be an Air Repeater. Using a weapon that needs to be reloaded with a magus is gonna put a real strain on your action ecconomy. The weapons damage die isnt geat nor does it have the juicy fatal or concusive traits but it will free up your actions to use a gun with a magus.However some familiar abilities from the CRB and APG were seemingly written before Bounded Casting existed and has awkward interaction with Magus and even worse interaction with the Summoner (which at least doesn't advertise familiar Class feats) Spell Battery - You gain one additional spell slot at least 3 levels lower than your highest-level ...

Given the builds above, you can create a good Magus with almost every race: anything with a boost to str, dex or int is a decent choice. Of course, small races should avoid the strength build. The races offer various bonuses for a favored class; however, as a frontliner with d8 hit dice, I recommend simply taking an extra hit point each level.
Spells: Horizon Thunder is a decent alternative to Shocking Grasp. It's more versatile (although spell attack w/o spellstrike is going to hurt) and the damage is less swingy, but you lose the persistent damage against metal wearing enemies (I'm assuming the +1 doesn't matter, since your using the spellstrike role).
