Jun 12, 2010 · Is there a Walmart near you? They usually have the Mossberg 500s for $227. I prefer the Nova over the 500 because it is virtually indestructable. $250 for a used Nova is a bit much. Have you tried haggling with the shop. $200 is more in the ballpark for the Nova, IMO. I have bought several 500s for $100-150 in really good shape. I have both a Nova and a 500. The 500 is a very stout gun, the stock plastic grips do have a little wobble but the wood upgrade is solid. I do love my Nova though, the only down sides to me are the safely and action release are awkward compared to the 500 and the foregrip on the Nova feels super light weight and cheap.

The only advantage of the Super Nova is the interchangable butt stock. But, I don't believe Benelli makes one that is 1" shorter, which is the only one worth changing to. I also am not a fan of pistol grip shotguns. For me, the pistol grip slows down transitions. Benelli will have better quality control, Mossberg has more aftermarket support and parts/barrels will be easier to find. Get the one you like more or the best deal. The Mossberg 500 is a very durable and reliable shotgun. It is very easy to field strip and clean. For home defense, First two out are game loads, next two 00 Buck, followed by two slugs....escalation of force for any situation. It feels thick in your hands. The 870 (or even a 500) felt way more responsive to me. If you just want an entry level beginner pump shotgun - go with the 870. I own it in 12 and 20 and I own a Benelli SBE 2 (which is great) but as a beginner gun, the 870 will last decades, you can beat it up, and it shoots straight.
