The immediate conclusion is they used a 3rd party modified app and got their strike / ban. When the ban wave comes, you'll know for sure because the whole subreddit will be talking about it. I would say 90% of r/PoGoAndroidSpoofing is Pgsharp users while the other 10% is everything else. More and more people are moving towards Pgsharp because it's easy. There's a big decline for rooting since it's getting harder to root new devices.

I was using pgsharp for half a year and I've been apart of this reddit group since I started using pgsharp and barely never saw a post about bans and now many (including myself) have been striked for using the basic features of standard. My PokeMod HAL accounts have never been banned. My PGSharp accounts were banned within 6 months of using the modded apk. -7.

I got 7 day 1 year ago and 30 day 1 month ago , both because i ve spoofed both cities of pogo fest. in game actions do not flag you, pgsharp and modded pogo apps will. immediately after using them. I spoofed during events and I haven't been banned yet.
